What is a Tree Removal Permit?
A Tree Removal Permit is necessary when you intend to remove, cut down, or otherwise injure a tree with a diameter of 30 cm (12 inches or about the thickness of a telephone pole) or more, measured at 1.4 m (4.5 feet or approximately chest height) above ground level. This requirement applies to trees on all types of private property, including single-family residential areas. In the City of Toronto, trees of any diameter located within Ravine Protection Areas are protected under the provisions of the City of Toronto Municipal Code Chapter 658, Ravines, requiring specific consideration.
